Flanged braided cord can be very problematic to apply by machine and get a really neat finish, so ensuring the use of the right method is imperative. Careful sewing on the correct side of the cord ensures that very little of the flanging shows around cushion edges and neatly joining the cord ends. In this video I hope you can see some of the methods used to achieve the best finish around cushions. These particular cushions are made using 3 different fabrics; a patterned Art Of The Loom fabric panel in the centre of the front flanked by Romo Linara each side and backed in a Wemyss velvet. Music: Images Of Tomorrow by Unicorn Head Fabric: Esta in Red/Forest by Colefax & Fowler You join me in the latter stages of making the most beautiful lined and interlined fully hand sewn curtains with lovely traditional triple pinch pleats carefully located to follow the design of the fabric and create a pleat to pattern finish. The fabric was not only a somewhat unstable linen which twists and skews as its worked on, it was also printed in a rather rudimentary fashion so the pattern doesn't line up across the width. The stripes that run vertically are also not evenly spaced and there was barely any extra print at the selvedges to create a good pattern match. Because of all these quirks, getting straight bottom and side hems was a challenge in itself. Extra fabric had to be added to the selvedges to create false turns so that pattern reuired to make turnings and form the pleat to pttern heading was not lost. A compromise approach was therefore necessary to share out all these quirks to create the most pleasing curtains with good pattern placement. I even use my iron to re melt set #hotglue and to #steam #plywood for #pelmets. If, like me, you accidentally order some vertical blinds at the wrong length and they are too long or maybe you are re-purposing some blinds on a different, shorter window or you've even bought some ready-made vertical blinds that are too long, then this is an elegant way to easily shorten them without the need for special tools or messy glue. All you need are scissors, a tape measure and a sewing machine. The vertical blind vanes I am altering here are vinyl so the existing stitch lines are impossible to get rid of. Worse still, these vinyl vanes are blackout too so the stitch lines are even more apparent and could easily let light through if not dealt with properly. Not a good look! So, no matter what fabric your blind vanes are made from this method will give you a neat and elegant finish and without any ugly original creases or stitch lines. This is one of several patchwork cushions I made a couple of years ago. I needed to make them quickly and simply so this method was a good one to use. Overlapping the ends of the piping is probably the quickest way I know of creating an acceptable join. I also added the zip in the back panel rather than in the edge for the same reason. It's an easy method (I'll do a separate video one day as I don't show it here) and much quicker. Creating a neat double turned hem can be tricky without forming bulk and lumpiness at the #corners which can be problematic on some things like #napkins, #placemats, #tablecloths and sheets. Placemats are the best example as they look their best when they lay completely flat. A standard hem can form such a build up of layers at the corners that the placemat won't sit flat. A quick pro tip and an easy way to remove stubborn pressure marks and creases from velvet and pile fabrics or other fabrics with a nap. Crush and pressure marks are often caused by heavy handling or from storing the fabric end on on a roll. Also, as in this case, sometimes the roll can break in transit which can create wrinkling all the way down the length of the piece and heavy marking of the velvet. This easy tip is just one of many ways to realign the pile on velvet so that the marks disappear. Several years ago I took on a young apprentice in my professional workroom. To help her learn safely and transition from using a slow domestic machine to one of my much faster B755 Mk III Brother industrial sewing machines I changed the pulley wheel from the original 10cm (4") diameter to a 7cm (2.75") diameter. I've been meaning to change it back ever since so this video shows me changing the pulley wheel back to the original 10cm one. Pulley wheel sizes range from 45mm (1.75") to 120mm (4.75") and the smaller the pulley, the slower the machine will run. Other, more basic methods of slowing down industrial machines have involved placing blocks of wood or foam or even empty thread cones under the foot peddle to effectively stop the machine from reaching its full speed and indeed I have employed these somewhat ad hoc techniques myself in the past but in a professional workroom, at least here in the UK, that is not an acceptable method for employers with regard to health & safety and insurance compliance! Whilst I was working on the machine I decided to also give it a really good clean from top to bottom including removing the head casing as well as the needle plate and feed dog to access the most used moving parts to give them a good check over and thorough clean. I also performed a complete oil change, cleaning the sump tray in the process. A small but important element of the service that I forgot to include in the video however, is oiling the rotary hook. Please see pinned comment below for instructions with an image. The oil I use for my machines is a standard lubricating oil from Eastman called P131, link below. Just because it looks simple when it's finished doesn't mean it is simple. Hidden stitch wave heading has lots of structure inside, therefore there are sevreal rown of stitching and a layer of stiffening buckram to hold it all up and make it look like absolutely no effort has gone into it at all. Finished by very carefully hand sewing the bottom edge of the tape down to the lining and through into the interlining layer ensures that no stitches show on the front for a super sleek look. This fabric was a challenge as it was not only embroidered but it was also shiny satin and had little sequins all over it. Fabric was called Gatsby by Clarke & Clarke

*Edit - at 38:20 I refer to the position of the top edge of the tape relative to the top edge of the curtain. In fact, the position of the top edge of the tape can vary depending on the combination of tape and track/pole used. I had just previously made some embroidered satin interlined Wave curtains (shown briefly in this video) and had to set the tape down by 7mm from the top of the curtain so that the pockets would be at the correct height to suit the track it was to be fitted to.* In this video tutorial I show you how I have developed a structurally strong and super neat hidden stitch Wave curtain heading for lined curtains. Other names for the method are invisible Wave, no sew Wave or stitch free Wave heading and the is also known as Ripplefold in the USA. Wave is such a lovely neat style that it just feels wrong to machine sew the tape on at the top and have all those stitches showing on the front. Storage boxes can be very expensive to buy and when you need at least 13 like I did it can very expensive indeed. So, I decided to find a way to make some basic but strong 30cm x 30cm square open top boxes with a plain fabric cover that could then be decorated on the front with scraps and samples of spare patterned fabrics. I happened to have an old fabric sample pattern book that I could cut up and use and was lucky to have some beautiful silks and linens in there to cover my boxes. You will require some sheet board. I used hardboard as it was the cheapest option but still sturdy but you could use plywood or mdf or even curtain makers Essex board. A standard 8' x 4' sheet will make 6 boxes with some spare so I used 2 sheets and made 13 boxes as my shelving unit had lots of compartments. You'll also need a jigsaw or a table saw or you could even get your local DIY timber department to cut the pieces for you. The making utilises a mixture of glueing and sewing so you'll need either a glue gun (preferred) or some fabric or contact adhesive and you'll also need to be confident on a sewing machine. I was delighted with the result and filled an otherwise messy shelving unit with incredibly useful storage. Get creative with your fabric choices or you could paint the fabric fronts with unique designs or add trims and handles. The drum shades are 25cm deep but the offcuts were only about 18cm deep and had a badly cut edge on one side. So I had to find a way of adding some fabric to make them deep enough and got lucky with the design of the fabric as it has a lovey shaded effect so I added a black velvet border to the bottom and created a smart gradient effect somewhat like an ombre effect. Making Blackout Lined Pinch Pleat Apex Curtains Filmed over a couple of days this video shows the complexities of making curtains for apex, angled or sloped windows. The curtains were made from a plain linen effect fabric and were blackout lined which adds an extra complication as pinning creates pin holes that light can show through. At the top are double pinch pleats to create a classic neat finish. Most of the video is timelapse without any instruction or commentary. Making sofa cushion covers is a great way to revamp a tired sofa or to change up the colour and give it a new lease of life like I am doing here. It's a good quality very heavy large modern corner sofa but it came with very sloppy low back cushions that were incredibly uncomfortable so I had new foam cushions made that extended higher and up and over the back. I then softened the fronts of the foam with cotton kapok filled padded 'jackets' before finally covering them in the covers I'm making here. I still have the base of the sofa to cover and will be making loose covers in black velvet and green chenille piping so they'll be the opposite to the cushions. I'll be making a video on the making of those too when I get round to it but as these are me they'll of course be at the back of the queue! This video shows the cutting, overlocking and sewing of all the zipped and piped components from start to finish and has information subtitles to explain each process. Much of it is in real time with natural sound but is speeded up where it repeats the same process. Later in the video I added some background music. I hope you enjoy the video. These are not your usual big soggy beanbags, these are neat and upright and make excellent occasional seating. Left not quite full of polystyrene beads they form a concave top to mould into a comfy seat. Filled right to the brim they create great pouffe type seating to perch on. I didn't film the whole making of these as I was up against time to get them complete for a client so there's not masses of detail but I do explain in voiceover the process and provide a diagram showing size details. They say vintage is anything over 25 years old. Well then, I think this Ashley Wilde fabric just about qualifies as it's an old style 48" wide so most likely it's from the nineties and is the perfect candidate for #recyledcurtains. I remember making up fabrics just like this in my first workroom at #thewindmillworkroom back in the nineties. The burgundy, blue and green combination was very popular at the time. There was so much #ashleywilde fabric here that was is such great condition that I could completely understand why the customer wanted to #makingnewcurtainsfromold and how you too can #makingnewcurtainsfromold at home. My ID client cleverly teamed it up the #classicstripe with a gorgeous #artoftheloom #woolherringbone fabric that was a beautiful warm grey tone at first glance but was actually a blend of all the colours in the stripe. You will see me make a pair of 2.5 widths and a single 5.5 width all #handsewn lined and #interlinedcurtains and with #doublepinchpleat heading. Ad Free Trade Only Exclusive These Oxford cushions have a contrast mitred edge instead of the usual standard plain edge in the same fabric but adding a contrast usually creates its own problems with bulky seams and a join across the back to accommodate the zip. Not this method though... no no... this method gives you a super sleek finish with no seams on the edge and a fantastic hidden zip that's very hard to spot. In this video I give you a step by step guide of how to make them from how big to cut the pieces right through to adding the invisible zip and top stitching the Oxford edge. Piped scatter cushions are a good staple for any curtain maker or upholsterer but getting them just nice can be tricky and those pesky zips cause everyone stress. There are also many different methods to the making, the way the piping is cut, where and how you join the piping, how and when you overlock the components and what shape you cut the corners. I've created this video showing the making of two piped and zipped cushions. 1.) Rounded corners, bias cut piping joined on the bias centre bottom of the cushion, overlocked front panel after the piping is sewn on and standard zip with flap. 2.) Square corners, straight cut piping joined on the bias bottom RH corner of the cushion, individually overlocked components and standard zip with flap. This block printed Indian cotton rug is lovely but is very thin and slides about and gets rucked up on a wooden floor making it quite a trip hazard. I could, of course, just use a piece of anti-creep underlay to stop the rug from moving around but that doesn't help with the lacklustre thinness of the rug itself. I wanted the rug to have more texture and body and be a little more decorative so interlining with cotton bump, lining and outline quilting it was the solution for me.
